10 things that make an online store look trustworthy
Shoppers decide in seconds whether to trust a store. Use this checklist to make sure yours passes the test.
Before anyone buys from a new online store, they ask themselves one silent question: “Can I trust this?” If the answer is not an immediate yes, they leave, often without you ever knowing why.
Here are ten things that make a store feel trustworthy, and that we check on every store we build or audit.
1. A clean, professional design
First impressions happen in under a second. Consistent fonts and colours, plenty of white space and sharp images signal a serious business. Cluttered layouts, clashing colours and blurry photos signal the opposite.
2. Great product photos
Customers cannot touch your products, so photos do all the work. Use several clear, well-lit images per product, including close-ups and, where relevant, photos on a model or in use.
3. Clear prices, with no surprises
Show prices clearly, including any discount, and make shipping charges obvious before checkout. Hidden costs at the last step are one of the top reasons people abandon carts.
4. Detailed product information
Sizes, materials, dimensions, care instructions and a size chart where relevant. The more questions your product page answers, the fewer people leave to “ask first”.
5. Real reviews
Reviews from genuine customers, ideally with photos, are powerful proof. Make it easy for happy customers to leave them, and never fake them. Shoppers can tell.
6. Proper policy pages
Shipping, returns and refunds, privacy and terms should be easy to find, usually in the footer. They reassure customers and are required by most payment gateways.
7. Real contact details
A visible phone or WhatsApp number, an email address and a business location show there are real people behind the store. A WhatsApp button is especially reassuring for Indian shoppers.
8. Familiar, secure payment options
Showing UPI, cards and trusted gateway logos at checkout tells customers their money is safe. Offering cash on delivery can also reassure first-time buyers.
9. A fast website
Slow stores feel broken and untrustworthy. Most of your visitors are on phones, often on mobile data, so every second counts. Compress images, remove unused apps and use a well-built theme.
10. A secure, professional domain
A padlock (HTTPS) in the browser bar and a proper domain name like yourbrand.com rather than a default platform address make an immediate difference.
Bonus: an “About” page with a human touch
Tell customers who you are, why you started and what you stand for. A photo of the founder or team makes a surprisingly big difference to trust.
How does your store score?
If you ticked fewer than eight of these, your store is probably losing sales it should be winning. The good news: most of these fixes are quick.
