How to move your Instagram business to a Shopify store, step by step
A practical roadmap for Instagram sellers who are ready for their own store, from getting your products ready to launch day.
You have decided it is time to move beyond DMs and give your Instagram brand a proper home. Good call. This guide walks through the whole journey, step by step, so you know exactly what to prepare and what to expect.
Step 1: Get your product information in one place
Before anyone builds anything, gather your product details. A simple spreadsheet works. For each product, note:
- Product name
- Price (and sale price, if any)
- Sizes, colours or other options
- A short description, plus fabric, material or specifications
- Stock quantity
- Weight (you will need this for shipping rates)
This is usually the most time-consuming part, so start early. The more complete this sheet is, the faster your store can launch.
Step 2: Sort out your product photos
Instagram photos are often cropped for the feed, overlaid with text or shot in different styles. On a website, consistency matters.
Aim for:
- Clean, well-lit photos on a consistent background
- Several angles per product, including close-ups of details
- The same shape (square or portrait) across your catalogue
- At least one lifestyle or on-model photo if you sell fashion or jewellery
Good photos are the single biggest factor in how premium your store looks.
Step 3: Choose your platform
For most Instagram brands, Shopify is the natural choice: it is quick to launch, easy to run and connects smoothly with Instagram and Facebook. If you have a very large catalogue or need unusual custom features, WooCommerce may suit you better. Read our full Shopify vs WooCommerce comparison if you are unsure.
Step 4: Get your domain
Pick a short, memorable domain that matches your Instagram handle as closely as possible. If yourbrand.com is taken, yourbrand.in or shopyourbrand.com are good alternatives.
Step 5: Design a store that feels like your brand
Your followers already know your look. Your website should feel like a natural extension of your Instagram, using the same colours, tone and style of photography, while being organised for shopping.
The pages that matter most are:
- Homepage: introduces your brand and highlights bestsellers and new arrivals
- Collection pages: organise products the way customers browse
- Product pages: great photos, clear prices and sizes, and a prominent buy button
- Cart and checkout: fast and simple, with no surprises
- Policy pages: shipping, returns, privacy and terms, which build trust and are needed for payment gateways
Step 6: Set up payments
Indian shoppers expect UPI, plus cards, netbanking and wallets. Connect a payment gateway such as Razorpay, Cashfree or PayU. Most need some business documents for verification, so apply early as approval can take a few days.
Decide whether to offer cash on delivery. It can boost conversions, but also increases returns. Many brands offer COD with a small extra fee or only above a certain order value.
Step 7: Set up shipping
Decide your shipping charges (free, flat rate or free above a certain order value) and connect a shipping aggregator like Shiprocket to book couriers and track parcels. Our shipping setup guide covers this in detail.
Step 8: Upload products and test everything
With your spreadsheet and photos ready, products can be uploaded in bulk. Then test the full journey yourself: browse on your phone, add to cart, pay, and check the order and confirmation messages. Fix anything confusing before real customers see it.
Step 9: Connect Instagram
Link your store to Instagram and Facebook so you can tag products in posts and reels. Update your bio link to point to your store, and add the link to your story highlights.
Step 10: Launch, and tell everyone
Announce the launch with a countdown on stories, a special launch offer and a pinned post. Tell your most loyal customers personally. Then keep sending people to the website instead of taking orders in DMs. It takes a few weeks for followers to adjust, and then it becomes second nature.
How long does all this take?
With products and photos ready, a professional build usually takes 4 to 8 weeks. If everything is prepared, an express launch in around 14 days is possible.
