Shopify vs WooCommerce: which is right for your Indian brand?

An honest, jargon-free comparison of the two most popular e-commerce platforms, and how to decide which one fits your business.

If you are planning an online store, you have almost certainly narrowed it down to two names: Shopify and WooCommerce. Both power millions of stores worldwide. Both work well in India. And both have loud fans who insist theirs is the only sensible choice.

We build on both, so we have no reason to push one over the other. Here is how we actually help clients decide.

The short answer

  • Choose Shopify if you want a store that is simple to run, reliable and quick to launch, and you are happy to pay a monthly subscription for that convenience.
  • Choose WooCommerce if you want full ownership and control, have a very large or complex catalogue, or content and SEO are a big part of how you sell.

Most Instagram sellers and growing D2C brands we work with end up on Shopify. Brands with thousands of products, unusual requirements or a content-heavy strategy often do better on WooCommerce.

What each platform actually is

Shopify is a hosted platform. You pay a monthly fee and Shopify handles the hosting, security, updates and uptime. You log in, add products and sell. The trade-off is that you work within Shopify’s system and pay for many extra features through apps.

WooCommerce is a free plugin that turns a WordPress website into a store. You own everything: the code, the data and the server it runs on. The trade-off is that you (or your developer) are responsible for hosting, updates, security and backups.

Side-by-side comparison

Shopify WooCommerce
Ease of running day to day Very easy Easy once set up, more to maintain
Monthly costs Subscription plus paid apps Hosting plus any premium plugins
Hosting and security Handled by Shopify Your responsibility
Flexibility High, within Shopify’s rules Almost unlimited
Large catalogues Good Excellent
Content and blogging Basic Excellent (it is WordPress)
Speed to launch Fast Slightly slower
Ownership You own your data, Shopify runs the platform You own everything

Costs: look beyond the monthly fee

People often say WooCommerce is “free” and Shopify is “expensive”. Neither is quite true.

With Shopify, you pay a monthly plan, and most stores add a few paid apps for things like reviews, WhatsApp buttons or advanced filters. Depending on your plan and payment gateway, there may also be transaction fees on top of your gateway’s charges. Check Shopify’s current pricing page for up-to-date numbers.

With WooCommerce, the plugin is free, but you need good hosting (cheap hosting makes stores slow), and you may buy premium themes or plugins. You also need someone to keep WordPress, the theme and plugins updated, or things eventually break.

In practice, for a typical growing Indian brand, the running costs end up closer than most people expect. The bigger difference is who does the maintenance.

Payments and shipping in India

Both platforms work well with Indian payment gateways such as Razorpay, Cashfree and PayU, which cover UPI, cards, netbanking, wallets and EMI. Both can offer cash on delivery, which still matters a lot for Indian shoppers.

For shipping, both integrate with popular aggregators like Shiprocket, so you can compare courier rates, print labels and share tracking from one place.

So for everyday Indian e-commerce needs, there is no clear winner here. Both do the job well when set up properly.

When Shopify is the better choice

  • You want to launch quickly and start selling.
  • You do not want to think about hosting, security or updates.
  • Your catalogue is small to medium (up to a few thousand products).
  • You sell heavily through Instagram and Facebook and want smooth social selling.
  • You would rather pay a predictable monthly fee than manage technical upkeep.

When WooCommerce is the better choice

  • You want complete ownership of your store and data.
  • You have thousands of products with complex attributes and filters.
  • You need custom features that would be awkward or expensive on Shopify.
  • Blogging and SEO content are central to how customers find you.
  • You already have a WordPress website with traffic you want to keep.

Our honest advice

Do not choose a platform based on what a friend uses or what one YouTube video says. Choose based on how you want to run your business day to day.

If you want the simplest life, go with Shopify. If you want maximum control and do not mind (or will pay for) maintenance, WooCommerce is fantastic.

And if you would rather not worry about any of it, that is exactly what our store management service is for. We keep the store running either way.
